Getting there
There is no airport at Turmi. You arrive by road, and there are two normal approaches:
- From Jinka (north) — the usual route if you have flown into South Omo, often after visiting Mursi

- From Konso / Arba Minch (northeast) — the usual overland approach from Addis, passing through
Konso and the Weito lowlands where the Arbore live.
Either way, journey times depend heavily on season and road surface rather than on distance.
What Turmi works as a base for
- Hamar country — the surrounding homesteads and, when one is happening and access is genuinely
appropriate, a bull-jumping ceremony.
- Dimeka market — the great meeting point of the Hamar–Banna–Bashada cluster,
on set market days.
- Karo villages on the bluffs above the Omo, east toward the river.
- The road south toward the delta and Dassanech country, and west toward
Nyangatom country when conditions allow.
Market days matter
Weekly markets at Turmi and Dimeka run on known days, and planning around them is one of the few genuinely schedulable things in the region — unlike ceremonies, which are not.
Practicalities
Turmi has lodges and campsites of varying standards, limited banking, and patchy connectivity. Fuel and supplies are more reliable in Jinka. Bring cash; see money guidance once published, and packing.
