Omo TribesEthiopia’s Omo Valley

Flagship journey

Deep Omo Valley

Ten to twelve days built around time, not checklists — fewer communities, longer stays, real guides, and the context to understand what you're seeing.

The Deep Omo Valley is our flagship journey and the clearest expression of what this site believes: that the Omo Valley rewards time, preparation, and relationship far more than a fast loop of photo stops. We deliberately visit fewer places for longer, with guides who hold real standing in the communities we spend time with.

Before you travel, you'll get a reading pack drawn from this site — the Mursi and Hamar pages, cattle culture, photography and consent — so you arrive understanding what you're seeing. That preparation is the difference between watching and understanding.

The itinerary below is a realistic template, not a rigid script; we shape it with you.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1
    Arrive Addis Ababa

Arrival, briefing, and an evening to orient. Overnight Addis.

  2. Day 2
    Fly south, road to Jinka

Internal flight and drive to Jinka, gateway to South Omo. Visit the South Omo Research Center museum for context.

  3. Day 3
    Mursi country

Into the Mago area to spend unhurried time in Mursi country with local guides — on Mursi terms, not a rushed roadside stop.

  4. Day 4
    Ari highlands and markets

Contrast the lowlands with Ari farming country and a local market; a lesson in the region's diversity.

  5. Day 5
    To Hamar country (Turmi)

Drive south to Turmi, the heart of Hamar country, settling in for several days rather than passing through.

  6. Day 6
    Hamar life and Dimeka market

Time with Hamar hosts and the vivid Dimeka market; understanding adornment, cattle, and bond-friendship.

  7. Day 7
    Flexible day for ceremony

Held open in case a bull-jumping or other ceremony can be attended respectfully, arranged through real relationships.

  8. Day 8
    Karo and the Omo bank

To the east bank of the Omo and the Karo, known for body painting and a dramatic river setting.

  9. Day 9
    Toward the delta / Dassanech

Travel toward the Omo delta and Dassanech country near Lake Turkana, and the river's changing life.

  10. Day 10
    Return leg

Begin the return through South Omo, with time for questions, revisits, and unhurried final encounters.

  11. Day 11–12
    Back to Addis and departure

Return flight to Addis, a debrief, and onward departure (timing depends on the chosen 10–12 day length).
