What to discuss with a travel clinic
Bring your itinerary and dates. Topics that typically come up for lowland Ethiopian travel include routine vaccination status, region-appropriate immunisations, malaria risk and prophylaxis in lowland areas, and whether a yellow fever certificate is relevant to your route or entry requirements. Ask about travellers' diarrhoea management and a sensible personal medical kit.
The everyday issues
Heat and dehydration, sun exposure, dust affecting eyes and airways, stomach upset from food and water, and fatigue from long driving days are the realistic day-to-day concerns. Drink more than you think you need, protect yourself from sun and dust, and don't schedule anything demanding for the afternoon you arrive after a long transfer. See packing.
Insurance — treat this as mandatory
When comparing policies, check specifically:
- Medical evacuation and repatriation limits — the number that matters most here.
- Whether remote / rural travel in Ethiopia is covered.
- Cover for trip disruption — relevant because access can change at short notice.
- Cover for camera and electronic equipment if you are bringing serious kit.
- Any exclusions relating to travel advisories for the areas you'll visit.
Accessibility and fitness
The journeys involve long drives on rough roads, heat, and walking on uneven ground. They are not physically extreme, but they are tiring. If you have mobility limitations, cardiac or respiratory conditions, or are travelling with young children or older family members, tell us before booking so we can advise honestly — including advising against it if that is the right answer.
